CULTIVATING A COTTAGE KITCHEN GARDEN

Cultivating a kitchen garden is a highlight of the summer season here at Steep Hill Cottage. Few things are more satisfying than a morning stroll through the garden, while sipping a fresh cup of coffee.

We are now in our fifth season on the lake and have learned a lot about the unique challenges of our northern lakeside landscape. Through trial, error, and investigation, we have discovered what thrives, what does not, and what needs more creative thinking to be successful.

This article distills those findings to provide an overview of how we have gone about developing and planning a Kitchen Garden at Steep Hill Cottage. Whether you’re working with a single planter or a substantial plot of land, this post will offer insights on:

  2. The Raised Planters We Use (& why)

  3. The Anatomy of Our Soil

  4. What We're Planting in our Six-Bed Garden

  5. What We Do to Defend Against Pests

  6. Our #1 Garden Design Takeaway
