David RuhL, P. Eng

David is a University of Toronto Engineer who bridges the gap between theoretical building science and the reality of the job site.

Having spent years physically building houses, Dave brings a level of practicality to his designs that many consultants lack. He focuses on the structure, envelope, and systems, ensuring every project is highly efficient, straightforward to build, and designed for a 100-year horizon.

He leads the technical design for all Steep Hill Studio collections, embedding professional-grade science into every plan. He also provides bespoke design and technical stewardship for complex projects in Muskoka through Ruhl Builds.

Lee Vosburgh, B. DEs

Lee is an OCADU designer who leads the aesthetic and spatial design of our projects. While the technical side of a building is critical, Lee focuses on the human experience; how light, volume, and texture make a space feel. She ensures that even the most advanced structures remain warm, intuitive, and deeply connected to their surroundings.

Lee’s work is rooted in a heritage-inspired philosophy and a preference for natural materials. By balancing classic styling with a modern understanding of space, she creates environments that evoke a sense of comfort and ease. At Ruhl Builds, she guides the design vision for Muskoka cottage clients, and at Steep Hill Studio, she defines the "Edition" styles that give our plans their timeless character.

What is THE STORY BEHIND steep hill STUDIO?

Steep Hill is the name of a cottage that was originally built in the early 1900’s. Its unassuming architecture and immersive setting attracted our attention. So too did its desperate need for a total overhaul.

We have been working on renovations of increasing complexity over the past 10 years through our engineering and construction business Ruhl Builds. Through this work, we developed a taste for old homes, antique details and difficult projects. Steep Hill seemed like the perfect place to apply our skills and knowledge.

In 2021, we moved to Steep Hill full time and began planning and design for the reconstruction project that is currently underway. We built The Heirloom Sleeping Cabin to live in during construction and to serve as a guest space when the work concludes.

In The Studio we explore all facets of design, construction, gardening and lifestyle to help and inspire others to tackle their own “Steep Hill”.

Thanks for visiting, we hope you’ll stick around and return again soon!
